THE GOOD:
Like any paint or graffiti program, this app enables you to draw with a pen tool, play with geometric lines and shapes and manage the color of your pen tip and fill. You can also customize the hue, softness and opacity of the stroke, erase unwanted marks or click undo for a quick fix. A menu with preferences as well as a user guide with FAQ and simple directions make this experience a little easier. If you have A LOT of time, patience and concentration, iDoodle can help you create virtually any image you want with your index finger.
THE BAD:
The wide range of possibilities is more of a novelty than anything else – anyone who is inclined to sit and play with their phone for more than 15 minutes might be more engaged by one of the game apps available. The tilt undo/redo function is temperamental and the zoom option doesn’t always cooperate.
BOTTOM LINE:
Aside from the basic frustration of trying to control a pen tip with the pad of your finger, this app provides a simple, user-friendly way to paint a simulated picture on your phone. Unless you need fonts, gradients, or to draw on photos, don’t bother with the $2.99 upgrade. Try “Trace” if you want more of an interactive game, or “FlipBook” to play with animation.
