Dirty Produce

THE DESCRIPTION:
“Dirty Produce” tells you which produce items have the highest and lowest risk for pesticide exposure.

THE GOOD:
It is easy to use this app to make your grocery shopping safer. Inform yourself so you can pick organic, or just make sure to wash your produce thoroughly. The “Dirty Dozen” lists 12 of the worst fruits and vegetables for pesticide content; the “Clean 15” identifies fifteen of the safest items.  Those are the highlights – you can also access the full list of forty-seven foods to watch for pesticides.

THE BAD:
You won’t find any explanations or background information about the individual produce items, pesticides, or healthcare; there is nothing about the nutrition of the fruit, or the dangers of specific types of pesticides. It doesn’t provide any news stories about current food or health issues, or instructions on how to thoroughly clean produce with an identified pesticide risk.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
You’re looking at three lists of produce items ranked according to pesticide content. The just vaguely tells you what to watch for, not what you can actually do to mitigate the risk. Don’t bother downloading the program; you can find much more detailed information online. Upgrade to “Produce Guide” ($1.99) to learn more about produce items or “Fresh Fruit” for general details about fruit and nuts.
